Vauxhall Combo 2019

Our Rating

The fourth-generation Vauxhall Combo will be in launched in December, just seven years after the current model was unveiled. For the first time, the Vauxhall Combo 2019 will be based on the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner and boasts a choice of petrol and diesel engines, wheelbases and payload options.

In 2017, Vauxhall was bought by PSA (the parent of Peugeot and Citroen) and shortly afterwards it was announced that Vauxhall’s van line-up would be based on its newly-developed Peugeot and Citroen platforms.

Vauxhall Combo 2019 specification and interior

Despite the low seating position, the windows are fairly low too which provides great all-round visibility, the driver’s seat is 4-way adjustable and the cab area feels remarkably spacious for a small van. The dashboard is composed of no-trills, hard-wearing plastics and there is an impressive amount of storage spaces dotted around the cab, including pockets in the dashboard, overhead shelf and the folding passenger seat to accommodate large boxes.

The Vauxhall Combo specification is extensive thanks to the enlarged three trim offering; the base-model ‘Edition’, the mid-spec ‘Sportive’ and the flagship ‘Nav LE’ models.

The Combo Edition features standard 15-inch steel wheels, electrically-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors and a nearside side loading door on the outside and a five-inch display radio with Bluetooth and DAB on the inside.

Sportive models are much more glammed up thanks to larger 16-inch wheels with full wheel trim, metallic paint offerings and colour-coded bumpers, in addition to rear parking sensors. Inside, mid-spec models also receive air-conditioning, cruise control with speed limited and a six-way driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, centre armrest and storage, as well as a four-way passenger seat.

Moving up to the Nav LE, customers, to our amazement, receive satellite navigation, a larger 8-inch touchscreen display, body colour exterior mirrors, exterior door handles, alloy wheels, side protection mouldings and front bumper with skid plate.

Vauxhall Combo 2019 dimensions and loading

Based on PSA’s new EMP2 platform (Efficient Modular Platform), the Vauxhall Combo 2019 will be available in two wheelbases. Both versions will have a standard load width of 1,630mm (1,229mm between the wheelarches) and a standard load height of 1,243mm.

The short and long wheelbases correspond to load lengths of 1,871mm and 2,167mm and load volumes of 3.3 and 3.9 cubic metres. However, the Combo also comes with a class-leading load-through facility (measuring 300mm by 600mm) which accommodates loads of up to 3,090mm and 3,440mm.

There are two nominal gross vehicle weights of 2.0 and 2.4 tonnes, which means that the Vauxhall Combo has a payload of between 658kg and 1,021kg. Towing capacities vary between 850kg and 1.5 tonnes.

All models come with six lashing points, a full, steel bulkhead and – for the first time in the Combo – a nearside side loading door as standard. There is also the option of an innovative load indicator that warns you if the van is overloaded which lights up once you exceed 80 per cent of the permitted payload shows an exclamation mark lights up if you’re overloaded.

Vauxhall Combo 2019 engines

Vauxhall Combo 2019 customers can choose between a variety of Euro6d compliant petrol and diesel engines, with CO2 emissions as low as 111g/km and fuel economy of up to 67.3mpg. The 1.2-litre petrol produces up to 109hp, while the 1.5-litre diesel comes with power ratings of 99hp and 128hp.

The engines will be combined with either a five or six-speed manual transmission although – for the first time in the small van segment – there will be an option of an eight-speed automatic with Quickshift technology with the top-of-the-range 1.5-litre (128hp) diesel.

Further 1.6-litre diesel units are mated to a 5-speed manual and available with 74hp (combined 64.2mpg, 114g/km CO2) on standard variants and 99hp with Start/Stop (combined 65.6mpg, 111g/km CO2) for the standard, XL and crew cab variants.

Ride and handling

Thanks to its low centre of gravity, the Vauxhall Combo is extremely comfortable to drive with very little body roll going into the corners while the steering feels well-connected with the road. The suspension is quite firm but the shock absorbers make light work of the bumps and divots of everyday roads.

We’ve only tested the 1.6 99hp output and it was rather spritely, even with 500kg on board. We’ll report back with road tests of the other engines in due course.
