GWM POER300 UK: Affordable Diesel Pick-Up Returns

It’s been a while since GWM—previously known over here as Great Wall—was last seen in the UK pick-up world, but they’re back with a new name and a fresh plan. The POER300’s already doing the rounds in other right-hand-drive countries, going by names like Cannon in Oz and P-Series in South Africa, so it’s not exactly new to the game.

Toby Marshall, GWM UK’s Managing Director, summed it up:

“With the POER300, GWM UK is delivering unmatched utility, power and technology at a very competitive price point in the UK market.”

“We fully expect the GWM POER300’s combination of capability and value to resonate strongly with small business users.

Under the hood, there’s a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that kicks out anywhere between 181bhp and 183PS, with torque figures between 354lb ft and 480Nm, depending on how it’s specced. You get a choice of either a seven- or nine-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s all-wheel drive as standard. Plus, there’s low-range gearing and a locking rear diff if you want to get it properly mucky.

As for what it can haul, the POER300’s got a 1,000kg payload limit and can tow up to 3,500kg — which is slap-bang on the money for anyone looking to pull trailers, machinery or livestock come 2025. Official fuel figures say it’ll do 32.7mpg combined (WLTP), which isn’t bad if you’re looking to keep fuel bills in check.

There’ll be three trims to pick from when it launches. The entry-level one’s called Lux and starts at £31,495 (ex VAT), which undercuts plenty of its rivals and makes it one of the cheaper pick-ups available in 2025. Even at that price, you’re getting 18-inch alloys, keyless entry, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless phone mirroring, a 7.0-inch digital dash, faux leather seats and wireless phone charging.

Then there’s the Ultra and Vanta trims, which add a few niceties if you’re after a bit more comfort—like heated and cooled seats, a sunroof, mood lighting, and a fancy surround-view camera. Whichever one you go for, they all come with a five-year/125,000-mile warranty as standard.

GWM’s diving back into a pretty busy market here, going up against well-established models like the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Volkswagen Amarok, Maxus T60 Max and KGM Musso. But where the POER300 is trying to stand out is on the value front — you’re getting a decent spec and some proper workhorse ability at a price that’s a bit more accessible.
