What happens for Van drivers at 70?
When you reach age 70, you must renew your licence every 3 years instead of the usual 10.
Crucially: if you had any additional entitlements — e.g. Category C1 (for heavier vans) or D1 (for minibuses) — those entitlements do not automatically carry over. To retain them after 70 you must actively re-apply (via the proper D47P / medical-report process).
However, your Category B entitlement continues automatically, provided you meet the health requirements and complete the renewal.
What van can I drive on Category B license?
1. Cars and Small Vans up to 3,500kg MAM
You can drive:
- Cars
- Car-derived vans
- Panel vans and small/medium vans up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM)
This includes almost all small and mid-size vans such as the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, Ford Transit Connect, Vauxhall Vivaro, and most Transit Custom variants.
2. Up to 8 Passenger Seats
You may drive vehicles with:
- Up to 8 passenger seats (i.e., 9 seats including the driver)
Larger minibuses need D1 unless you meet a specific set of conditions.
3. Optional Trailer Allowance
You can tow:
- A trailer up to 750kg MAM, or
- A heavier trailer if the combined MAM of vehicle + trailer is no more than 3,500kg
