Best Vans for Camper Conversion in the UK
If you’re planning a camper van conversion, choosing the right base van is half the battle (the other half is resisting the urge to add “just one more cupboard”). In the UK, a few models consistently stand out thanks to their space, shape and conversion-friendliness.
Volkswagen Transporter
The VW Transporter remains the poster child for camper conversions. Its boxy load area, good driving manners and huge aftermarket support make it ideal for first-timers and pros alike. It’s compact enough for daily driving yet big enough for a proper bed and kitchenette. Prices are strong, but resale values are too.
Ford Transit Custom
For many UK converters, the Transit Custom hits the sweet spot. It offers excellent interior width, plenty of roof height options and widespread availability of parts and conversion kits. It’s also cheaper than a Transporter and feels very “van-like” in a reassuring, British way.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
If you want space to stand up straight without yoga training, the Sprinter is a top choice. Its long wheelbase and high-roof options are perfect for full-time campers with showers, fixed beds and lots of storage. Running costs are higher, but the payoff is comfort and versatility.
Fiat Ducato / Peugeot Boxer / Citroën Relay
These siblings are favourites with professional motorhome builders for good reason. Their wide, square load bays maximise usable space, making layouts easier. They’re excellent for larger conversions and generally offer strong value for money.
Renault Trafic / Vauxhall Vivaro
A practical alternative to the Transporter and Transit Custom, these vans offer good internal dimensions and lower purchase prices. They’re ideal if you want a compact camper without paying premium-brand money.
In short:
-
Weekend camper: Transporter or Trafic
-
Everyday + camper combo: Transit Custom
-
Full-fat campervan: Sprinter or Ducato-based vans
Choose your van wisely – changing layouts is easier than changing wheelbases.
