If you’re planning a camper van conversion, choosing the right base van is half the battle (the other half is resisting the urge to add “just one more cupboard”). In the UK, a few models consistently stand out thanks to their space, shape and conversion-friendliness.

Volkswagen Transporter

The VW Transporter remains the poster child for camper conversions. Its boxy load area, good driving manners and huge aftermarket support make it ideal for first-timers and pros alike. It’s compact enough for daily driving yet big enough for a proper bed and kitchenette. Prices are strong, but resale values are too.

Ford Transit Custom

For many UK converters, the Transit Custom hits the sweet spot. It offers excellent interior width, plenty of roof height options and widespread availability of parts and conversion kits. It’s also cheaper than a Transporter and feels very “van-like” in a reassuring, British way.
