It can be tax-efficient for a sole trader to buy a new van, but it depends mainly on how you pay for it (cash, finance or lease), how you use it (business vs private), and whether it’s petrol/diesel or electric. Unlike cars, vans are generally treated more simply for tax, which can work in your favour.
Income tax: claiming the cost
If you use the van for your trade, you can usually claim tax relief either via capital allowances (if you buy/HP it) or by deducting lease rentals (if you lease). The “best” route depends on your profits and cashflow in the year you get the van.
Capital allowance rules and rates can change with Budgets, so check the latest HMRC guidance. In practice, many sole traders aim to claim a large portion of the cost early if they have a strong profit year, but spreading relief can be better if profits are uneven.
Private use: the common catch
If you use the van privately (even a bit), you normally have to restrict your claim to the business-use percentage. Keep a simple mileage log, especially in the first few months, to justify your split.
VAT: often a big advantage
If you’re VAT-registered and the van is used for business, you can often reclaim some or all VAT. Full VAT recovery is typically easiest where there’s no significant private use. VAT rules are fact-specific, so confirm with your accountant if you’ll use it personally.
Running costs and VED
Running costs (fuel/charging, insurance, servicing) are generally deductible in proportion to business use. For Vehicle Excise Duty, vans pay a flat rate (currently £345/year), regardless of emissions.
What about electric vans?
Electric vans can be attractive for city work and Clean Air Zones. There’s also the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant (currently up to £2,500 under 2,500kg GVW, or up to £5,000 up to 4,250kg GVW), but OZEV reviews grants regularly—check Gov.uk before ordering.
If you tell your accountant (or me) your expected profit, VAT status, and whether you’re considering buying, HP or leasing, you can usually identify the most tax-efficient route quickly.
