You usually lose roughly a third to a half of the usable load length when you choose a crew cab (double cab) van, because the second row of seats sits inside the load area. In real terms, that often turns a “long-load” van into one that’s better for shorter tools, boxes and site equipment rather than full-length materials.

What changes in the load area?

A crew cab adds a fixed bulkhead behind the second row. That bulkhead is the big space-hog: it shortens the load bed and can also reduce the width/height you can use right behind the seats (depending on trim and safety structures).

Typical space loss (what to expect)

Exact figures vary by model and wheelbase, but as a rule of thumb:

  • Medium vans (e.g. Transit Custom/Vivaro/Transporter class): expect the load length to drop by around 800–1,200mm versus the equivalent panel van.
  • Large vans (e.g. Transit/Movano/Sprinter class): the drop is often around 1,000–1,500mm, though long-wheelbase versions can still leave a decent load bed.

Payload can also reduce slightly because the extra seats, glazing and trim add weight. The official payload figure on the new van’s spec sheet is the one that matters.

Trade-offs to think about

People vs. pipes: If you regularly carry 5–6 people, a crew cab is usually the cleanest solution. If you only occasionally need extra seats, a second vehicle or a kombi-style van (more flexible seating) may preserve more load space.

Two quick checks before you order

Ask the dealer for the load length behind the bulkhead (in mm) for the exact wheelbase/roof you’re buying, and confirm whether you can still fit your longest regular items (ladders, plasterboard, conduit) without going diagonal.
