Auto Pay is Transport for London’s (TfL) automated payment system that makes paying the Congestion Charge, ULEZ, and LEZ simpler and cheaper for registered vehicles, including vans. Instead of manually paying each time you enter a charging zone, Auto Pay tracks your vehicle and bills you monthly.

How Auto Pay Works

  • You register your van (or fleet) with TfL through a secure online account.

  • TfL automatically identifies when your vehicle enters the Congestion Charge zone, ULEZ, or LEZ.

  • Charges are added to your account and billed monthly, so there’s no need to pay daily.

  • You receive a monthly statement showing all trips and charges.

Why Van Drivers Use It

  • Lower penalties: If your vehicle is registered, you can’t receive a penalty for forgetting to pay — because Auto Pay prevents missed payments.

  • Cheaper Congestion Charge: Registered vehicles receive a reduced daily Congestion Charge rate compared with paying manually.

  • Easier admin: Ideal for businesses with multiple vans, as you can add several vehicles under one account and see all charges in one place.

Costs

  • There is an annual £10 registration fee per vehicle.

  • After that, charges are applied at the discounted rate (if applicable) and billed monthly.

Electric Vans and Auto Pay

From 2nd January 2026, the daily Congestion Charge will increase to £18.00 (if paid on the day) or £21.00 (if paid within 3 days). The new Cleaner Vehicle Discount means electric vehicles registered for Auto Pay will pay less, electric vans will no longer be exempt from the Congestion Charge, but when registered to Auto Pay they qualify for the reduced daily rate (50% under new TfL rules). This is now the best-value way for EV van drivers entering central London.
