Start with payload and volume (not just size)
Roofing materials are bulky and can be heavy. Insulation and ladders need length and height; tiles, rolls and toolboxes quickly eat payload. Check the van’s payload on the exact trim you’re ordering (it changes with engine, gearbox, seats, racking and towbar). Most roofers need ladder racks, a rear roller, roof bars and internal racking. Ordering these as manufacturer-approved conversions (or via the dealer) can protect warranty and reduce downtime. Also think about a side-loading door wide enough for boards and a ply-lined load area from new.
Urban work: diesel vs electric
If you work in London or other Clean Air Zones, a new Euro 6 diesel van is typically compliant, but always check the specific zone rules. If your routes are predictable and you can charge overnight, an electric van can make sense; the Plug-in Van Grant is currently up to £2,500 (under 2,500kg GVW) or £5,000 (up to 4,250kg GVW), but OZEV support can change — confirm on Gov.uk.
