The “best” new van for carrying generators and compressors is usually a medium panel van (think Transit Custom / Vivaro / Transporter size) with the right payload, load length and tie-down provision. These loads are heavy, dense and can be awkward to position, so choosing on brand alone is less important than getting the weights and layout right.
Start with weights: payload and axle limits
Don’t just add up the kit weight and compare it to the brochure payload. Generators and compressors often sit over the rear axle, so rear axle weight can be the limiting factor even if the overall payload looks fine. Ask the dealer for the van’s axle limits and consider a higher GVW variant if you’re close. Remember: most new vans up to 3.5 tonnes GVW can be driven on a standard car licence (Category B), but check if you’re considering anything heavier.
Loading practicality: doors, floor and securing
Look for wide side door opening, a low load height and a strong, flat load floor. If you’ll use a ramp, check the step height and whether the van can take a rated load restraint system (proper lashing rings, not just light-duty hooks). A factory bulkhead is strongly recommended to protect occupants from shifting kit.
Powertrain choice: diesel, petrol or electric?
For frequent heavy loads and motorway miles, a modern diesel is still the common choice. If you work in Clean Air Zones, a new Euro 6 diesel is typically compliant, but rules vary by city—check the local CAZ/ULEZ checker. Electric vans can work well for urban work and towing is often limited, but range drops with weight and stop-start use.
