The “best” new van for a mobile valeting business is usually a small-to-medium panel van that’s easy to park, cheap to run, and has enough payload for your water tank, generator and kit. For most UK operators, that points to a short-wheelbase compact van (think Ford Transit Custom / VW Transporter / Vauxhall Vivaro / Renault Trafic class) rather than a tiny car-derived van or a big LWB.
Start with your payload (it catches people out)
Water is heavy: 100 litres is about 100kg before you add the tank, reels, chemicals, pressure washer, generator, batteries and racking. Many valeters end up needing 500–650kg+ usable payload. Check the van’s payload on the exact trim you’re ordering (auto gearboxes, higher specs and EV batteries can reduce payload). Also check axle limits if you’re carrying a tank behind the bulkhead.
Size: SWB usually wins
A SWB compact van is a sweet spot: it’ll take a sensible tank setup, still fits residential streets, and is less hassle in multi-storeys and tight driveways. If you mainly do fleet work on industrial estates, a longer van can make loading and layout easier.
Diesel vs electric (ULEZ and running costs)
New diesels that meet Euro 6 are generally compliant with London ULEZ and most Clean Air Zones, but always check the vehicle on the relevant scheme website. Electric vans can be ideal for urban rounds (quiet, low running costs), but plan around range in winter and the weight of your kit. If you go electric, the Plug-in Van Grant can reduce the purchase price (currently up to £2,500 under 2,500kg GVW or up to £5,000 up to 4,250kg GVW, but OZEV support is reviewed and can change—check Gov.uk).
Spec tips that matter for valeters
Prioritise: twin side doors (access on any driveway), a ply-lined load area, LED load lights, extra 12V points, and a proper bulkhead. Consider an alternator upgrade if you run electrics all day.
