The “best” new van for sign makers and print businesses is usually a medium panel van with a long load length, good payload, and strong tie-down options — because you’ll often carry long rolls, boards and delicate finished work. For many UK sign shops, that points to a long-wheelbase (LWB) Ford Transit Custom, Volkswagen Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro/Peugeot Expert/Citroën Dispatch, or Mercedes Vito. The right choice depends on what you carry most: long rigid sheets, bulky but light items, or heavy kit like laminators and stands.
Start with your typical load
Rigid boards (e.g. 8×4 sheets): If you regularly move 8×4, you’ll want a larger van (often a large panel van such as a Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter or VW Crafter) or a specialist solution. Many medium vans won’t take 8×4 flat without compromises.
Roll media and long lengths: A LWB medium van is ideal. Look for a long, square load bay and the ability to fit a secure tube/roll rack.

Payload, not just size

Electric vs diesel for city work

As of the latest confirmed guidance, the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant offers up to £2,500 for electric vans under 2,500kg GVW and up to £5,000 up to 4,250kg GVW, but OZEV support can change — check Gov.uk when ordering. Van VED is a flat rate (currently £345/year) regardless of emissions.
