If you’re regularly carrying heavy batteries and equipment, the “best” new van is usually the one that gives you enough payload (what you can legally carry), a low, stable load area, and the right body style for safe restraint — without pushing you into a licence or running-cost bracket you don’t need. In practice, most trades doing this well end up in a 3.5-tonne (3,500kg GVW) panel van or a chassis cab with a box/Luton body.
Start with the legal limit: payload and axle weights
Heavy batteries are dense, so you can hit limits quickly. Check the van’s payload (GVW minus kerb weight) and also the front/rear axle limits — a pallet of batteries near the bulkhead can overload the front axle even if your total payload looks OK. Ask the dealer for the van’s plated weights and the exact payload for the trim and options you want (auto gearboxes, tow bars and racking reduce payload).
Best van types for heavy kit
3.5t large vans (e.g. Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Ducato/Boxer/Relay class) are the common choice: good payload potential, strong load floors, and lots of tie-down points. If you need to move batteries on pallets, prioritise a long wheelbase/high roof and consider a reinforced floor and load-securing rails.
Chassis cab + box/Luton suits bulky equipment and makes it easier to fit shelving and restraint systems properly. It can also keep heavy loads lower and more central than stacking in a panel van.
EV vs diesel for heavy loads
Electric vans can be excellent in clean air zones, but the battery weight can reduce payload versus an equivalent diesel, and range drops more when heavily loaded.
