For a new mobile workshop van, the “best” choice is usually the one that matches your tool weight, the space you need to work safely inside, and where you drive (especially Clean Air Zones). In practice, most trades end up choosing either a medium panel van for a good balance, a large van for maximum fit-out space, or an electric van if you spend time in urban emission zones.
Most popular all-rounders: medium panel vans
If you want racking, drawers, a vice, parts storage and still decent manoeuvrability, look at vans in the Transit Custom / VW Transporter / Vauxhall Vivaro / Peugeot Expert / Renault Trafic class. Choose L2 if you need longer bench space or to carry longer stock (pipe, conduit, trunking). They’re also easier to park on domestic driveways than big vans.
When you need to work inside: large vans
If you genuinely need standing room, a fixed workbench, or to carry bulky kit (compressors, generators, welders), consider a high-roof large van (e.g. Transit / Sprinter / Crafter / Boxer/Relay/Ducato). You’ll get better internal height and payload options, but running costs and access to tight sites can be worse.
Urban work and emission zones: electric vans
For city-based call-outs, an electric van can be a strong workshop base: quiet, no idling worries, and generally CAZ/ULEZ friendly. The Plug-in Van Grant can reduce the purchase price (currently up to £2,500 under 2,500kg GVW and up to £5,000 up to 4,250kg GVW, but OZEV support is reviewed and can change—check Gov.uk).
Key spec checks before you order
Payload and axle limits matter most once you add racking, drawers, a bulkhead, floor, inverter, and tools. Ask the dealer for the van’s payload on the exact trim and wheelbase, then budget the fit-out weight. Also think about side door width (for tool chests), 12V/230V power needs, and whether you want a factory PTO/inverter option where available.
Two quick follow-ups to consider: will you tow (choose the right engine/EV and towing limit), and do you need to reclaim VAT (most new panel vans allow VAT reclaim for VAT-registered businesses, but mixed private use can complicate it—confirm with your accountant).
