Toyota Proace Max: A New Contender in the Large Van Market

In a significant expansion of its Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) range, Toyota has unveiled the Proace Max, marking the brand’s foray into the large van sector in Europe. This move not only completes Toyota’s LCV lineup but also pitches it directly against established competitors in this segment.

Proace Max: The New Entrant

The Proace Max stands out as Toyota’s largest commercial vehicle offering in Europe. It’s available in various configurations, including chassis cab, and introduces a fully electric option, a first in this size for Toyota. This addition seems to be a strategic response to the growing demand for zero-emission LCVs, placing it in competition with similar models from Peugeot, Citroën, and Vauxhall.

Toyota’s Proace Max claims ‘best in class’ for payload and load area, though these claims await detailed comparison with its Stellantis relatives. The vehicle is designed to cater to various needs with multiple body sizes and styles. It’s also Toyota’s first large van in Europe to offer full-height rear doors that open to 270 degrees, enhancing loading convenience.

Electric and Diesel Options

The Proace Max Electric is notable for its substantial cargo capacity of 17 cubic meters and a 268bhp electric powertrain with a 110kWh battery. It boasts fast charging capabilities and a range of up to 261 miles under the WLTP standard. For those preferring traditional fuel options, there’s a Euro 6E-compliant diesel engine available, with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Updates to Proace and Proace City

Alongside the Proace Max, Toyota has also refreshed the Proace and Proace City models. These updates include a new grilleless face for a distinctive appearance and the integration of Toyota Safety Sense technology, enhancing driver support and safety.

The Proace offers improved performance in both diesel and electric variants. The electric model now features a 75kWh battery pack, extending its range to 217 miles. The Proace City leads its segment in load and passenger carrying capabilities, with the electric version offering a range of 205 miles from a 55kWh battery.

Overall Strategy and Market Position

With these updates and the introduction of the Proace Max, Toyota aims to strengthen its position in the European LCV market. The brand’s focus on offering a range of vehicles that cater to all popular segments, coupled with the commitment to enhanced service centers and longer warranties, underlines its strategy to become a more significant player in this competitive market.
