Renault Master Clinches Parkers Commercial Vehicle of the Year 2025

In a notable win, Renault has claimed the title of “Commercial Vehicle of the Year 2025” with its all-new Master van at the annual Parkers Van and Pickup Awards. In a competitive market where Ford has long held sway, Renault’s victory represents a shift in priorities among van customers, especially in areas like energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The Renault Master’s 2025 model stood out with its range of awards, also securing the “Best Large Van” and “Best Electric Van” titles.

Still, Ford held strong across other categories, suggesting that while Renault’s innovations are appreciated, traditional choices remain appealing to many in the industry.

A Focus on Electric Efficiency in the Renault Master E-Tech

The Renault Master E-Tech, the brand’s all-electric variant, is a major draw this year. Renault’s approach has been to emphasize range efficiency rather than increasing battery size—a strategy that allows the E-Tech to travel longer distances on a smaller, lighter battery. This choice has pros and cons. On one hand, the efficiency gains enable the van to carry a larger payload and keep costs lower, appealing to small and mid-size businesses concerned about running costs. On the other, relying on battery efficiency alone may present challenges for users with frequent or heavy-duty needs, as a larger battery could provide a more comfortable margin for high-mileage routes.

Tom Webster, Deputy Head of Parkers’ Digital Automotive Hub and Vans Editor, praised this design decision, noting, “The aerodynamic efficiency means it has a smaller battery but a superior electric range to its major competitors, meaning it has an impressive payload too.”

Ford Retains Strong Market Position with the Transit and Ranger

Ford, a consistent favourite in the commercial vehicle sector, did not go unnoticed at this year’s awards. The Transit Courier, for example, won “Best Small Van,” a testament to its design improvements in space and handling. The popular Ford Transit Custom held onto its title as “Best Medium Van,” bolstered by an electric version that has been well-received for urban and light commercial use. Meanwhile, the Ford Ranger, a top pick in the pickup category, continues to dominate as “Best Pickup,” showcasing a wide range of options. Ford has also announced a plug-in hybrid variant of the Ranger for 2025, reflecting the brand’s broader strategy to offer versatility across powertrains.

Electric Vehicles in the Spotlight, Despite Market Challenges

While Renault’s electric Master E-Tech is celebrated for its advances, it exists within a broader market where EVs face adoption challenges. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a decline in market share over the past year, reflecting lingering concerns around EV practicality, particularly for commercial use. According to Parkers, recent advancements have helped alleviate range anxiety for some, yet the public charging infrastructure still needs expansion to fully support commercial EV users. Keith Adams, Editor-in-Chief at Parkers, commented on these market dynamics: “The reality is that EVs are becoming viable for an increasing number of buyers, but the remaining challenge is destination charging in our towns and on our streets.”

With 2025’s awards season concluded, the commercial vehicle market is poised to keep evolving as brands like Renault and Ford respond to changing customer demands. Renault’s victory with the Master indicates an openness to practical electric solutions, especially in urban settings, while Ford’s consistent wins show a continuing demand for traditional reliability and a range of powertrain options
