The 2024 Volkswagen Transporter: A Partnership with Ford

Volkswagen’s iconic mid-sized van, the Transporter T6.1, has been retired from the market. Produced between 2015 to 2023, its absence leaves many eagerly awaiting its successor. However, Volkswagen isn’t navigating this new journey alone.

A collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford under Project Cyclone has been brewing behind the scenes. While the industry had already witnessed the joint effort that birthed the new Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, the upcoming 2024 Transporter is also expected to be a product of this partnership.

It’s no secret that the Transit Custom plays a vital role in Ford’s lineup, having achieved the status of the UK’s best-selling vehicle. In contrast, the VW Transporter has built its reputation and loyal following over the years, especially among enthusiasts of its lifestyle-oriented variants like the VW California camper van. Interestingly, the future VW California models will pivot from the Transporter base and adopt the Multivan people carrier instead. A strategic move by Volkswagen to retain its camper van identity.

But does this shared development mean the 2024 VW Transporter will mirror the Ford Transit Custom? Not necessarily.

Sure, there’ll be shared components and similarities, a strategic decision to optimize resources. Yet, completely identical models would be a misstep for these two historically competitive brands. A glimpse at the Amarok and Ranger collaboration is promising. While they share some components, each brand has incorporated their distinct designs, and the new Transporter is expected to follow suit. Expect key design elements, especially the front end, to reflect Volkswagen’s signature style, while remaining distinct from Ford’s.

Practical elements such as side panels may be harder to differentiate, but we could anticipate slight modifications around the rear end. Regardless, the upcoming Transporter is more likely to resemble the Transit Custom than Volkswagen’s stylish electric ID.Buzz Cargo.

On the driving front, Volkswagen might introduce nuanced adjustments, just like they did with the Amarok’s suspension, ensuring both vehicles offer a distinct driving experience.

Shared Features and Performance

Given the shared foundation, both the Ford and VW models will likely sport similar dimensions. Payload capacities around 1,100kg and towing capacities close to 2,000kg are anticipated, along with features like a flat cabin floor.

Under the Hood

The engine configurations and transmission systems will likely be consistent across both vehicles. Although exact offerings from VW remain under wraps, looking at Ford’s lineup offers some clues. The range of diesel engines from Ford includes 110hp, 136hp, 150hp, and 170hp options. Based on the previous T6.1 Transporter’s specs, it seems plausible for Volkswagen to adopt something akin to Ford’s 2.0-litre diesel range, albeit with a unique spin.

Moreover, given the industry’s shift towards electric vehicles, it’d be a missed opportunity if VW didn’t introduce an electric version of the Transporter. If so, it could closely rival the Transit Custom’s EV model, which boasts a maximum range of 236 miles and power outputs of 134hp or 215hp.

All in all, while collaboration breeds familiarity, both brands appear keen on retaining their distinct identities. Only time will tell how these nuances will play out in the 2024 Transporter.
