Vauxhall Movano Hydrogen Launches in 2025 with Zero Emissions Focus

Vauxhall has confirmed that its Movano Hydrogen large van will officially go on sale in the UK from spring 2025. Priced from £66,450 (on-the-road price after grants), this new entry into the zero-emissions market combines hydrogen fuel cell technology with practical design for commercial use. With a claimed range of up to 311 miles and rapid refuelling capabilities, the Movano Hydrogen aims to deliver a viable alternative to electric and diesel vans.

Key Features and Specifications

The Movano Hydrogen leverages over two decades of expertise from Vauxhall-Opel and parent company Stellantis in hydrogen fuel cell technology. It will be powered by a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, delivering a maximum output of 45kW. This system works alongside an 11kWh lithium-ion battery to offer support during acceleration and regenerative braking.

Four high-pressure hydrogen tanks, capable of storing up to 7kg of hydrogen, provide the van’s primary energy source. These tanks operate at 700 bar, enabling the impressive range. Refueling takes under five minutes, a significant advantage over the longer charging times required by battery-electric vehicles.

In terms of power, the Movano Hydrogen’s electric motor generates 110kW (150PS) and 410Nm of torque, ensuring robust performance for daily commercial tasks.

Design and Features

The Movano Hydrogen will launch in the Prime specification, which includes a range of modern features tailored for convenience and comfort. Inside, it comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with TomTom navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice control. Other standard features include rear parking sensors, automatic air conditioning, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and keyless entry.

The exterior design mirrors the existing Movano Electric, maintaining a familiar profile but incorporating hydrogen-related hardware seamlessly. This makes it a practical option for businesses looking for a green upgrade without significant changes in vehicle operation.

Practicality and Market Position

The Movano Hydrogen offers practical advantages for businesses prioritizing operational efficiency and sustainability. Its cargo space remains unaffected by the hydrogen system, making it competitive with traditional diesel and electric counterparts. Additionally, the quick refuelling time addresses a common pain point of downtime associated with recharging electric vehicles.

With prices starting at £66,450, the hydrogen van is more expensive than the equivalent electric Movano (£46,435) and significantly pricier than diesel versions (£35,010). However, Vauxhall aims to appeal to fleet operators seeking long-term savings and reduced environmental impact.

Hydrogen: A Growing Focus for Vauxhall

The Movano Hydrogen follows the earlier trials of Vauxhall’s Vivaro Hydrogen in the UK. This smaller van, already available in left-hand-drive markets under the Opel brand, served as a testing ground for Vauxhall’s hydrogen ambitions. These efforts reflect a broader push towards diversifying low-emission vehicle options.

The Movano Hydrogen will complement Vauxhall’s existing lineup of electric vans, which includes the Combo Electric, Vivaro Electric, and Movano Electric. By offering a hydrogen-powered alternative, Vauxhall positions itself to meet varying customer needs in a shifting regulatory and environmental landscape.
