Volkswagen Multivan Review 2023

Our Rating

The Volkswagen Multivan has come a long way from the ‘vans with windows’ of the past. In this review, we’ll delve into the practicality and performance of this modern MPV, highlighting its positive aspects while also addressing some drawbacks.

Exterior Design and Styling

The Multivan’s exterior design is a far cry from the simplicity of its predecessors. It boasts a contemporary look that sets it apart in the MPV segment. However, it’s worth noting that it competes more with van-based rivals like the Ford Tourneo Custom and Mercedes V-Class than car-like models.

Performance and Handling

Under the hood, the Multivan offers a range of powertrain options, from a 2.0-liter diesel engine to petrol motors and even a plug-in hybrid variant. While the 148bhp 2.0 TDI diesel provides ample power for highway driving, city dwellers may find the 1.4 eHybrid plug-in hybrid appealing for its electric-only range. The handling is decent, with the suspension handling road imperfections well, although it’s not as refined as some competitors.

Interior and Tech

Inside, the Multivan impresses with its spacious and flexible cabin. The front seats are comfortable and adjustable, and there’s ample storage space throughout the cabin. The infotainment system, featuring a 10.0-inch display, is familiar from other VW models but can be somewhat cumbersome to navigate. However, it does support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Practicality

When it comes to practicality, the Volkswagen Multivan truly shines, offering a multitude of configurations to meet a wide range of needs.

Boot Space and Load Capacity

The Multivan comes in two body lengths – Standard and Long, both sharing the same wheelbase but with differing rear overhangs. This clever design ensures that regardless of your choice, you’ll have ample interior space.

Behind the third row of seats, you’ll find a spacious luggage shelf. With this shelf in place and the seats in their normal positions, you’ll have a generous 469 liters of cargo space at your disposal. This increases significantly when you adjust the seating arrangement. Behind the second row, in a typical configuration, you’ll have 1844 liters of cargo space. However, if you decide to remove all the seats, which is a straightforward process despite their weight, you’ll have a maximum cargo capacity of 3672 liters in the standard version and 4053 liters in the longer version.

The tailgate offers a minimum width of 1200mm and a height of 1160mm, making it easy to load and unload even bulky items. The side doors open broadly, and with a low step just inside, they provide excellent access to the rear, making loading and unloading a breeze.

Inside the Multivan, versatility is the name of the game. As standard, it comes with seven seats arranged in a 2-2-3 layout. However, you can opt for a six-seater configuration with captain’s chairs in all three rows, adding a touch of luxury. Access to the third row is effortless, as the center seats can be slid out of the way.

The Multivan’s seating flexibility is one of its strong suits, no doubt. However, let’s address the elephant in the room: removing and rearranging the seats, while versatile, can be a bit of a workout. It’s not a quick and effortless process, especially if you’re doing it frequently.

Additionally, the claim of “seating for seven” isn’t without its quirks. Yes, there are seven seats, but depending on the configuration, some passengers may find the third-row seating a bit cramped.

Verdict

In conclusion, the Volkswagen Multivan is a capable MPV with a lot to offer. It excels in practicality and versatility, making it a top choice for those in need of a flexible people carrier. However, it’s not a small or cheap vehicle, and some petrol engines can be thirsty. Additionally, the infotainment system could use some improvements for a smoother user experience.

In the crowded MPV market, the Multivan stands out as a modern and functional option. Whether it’s the right choice for you depends on your specific needs and preferences.
