EV Towing Capacities Guide

Towing is quite an interesting subject area when comparing the towing capacities of electric vans, indeed, it’s only recently that electric van manufacturers started to show in their specification sheets the towing weights. Indeed for the first few years the electric vehicles just didn’t tow as the manufacturer concentrated on achieving an acceptable payload for the van. Thankfully the situation has changed and many vans can now tow although in many cases is this lower than its diesel equivalent.
SMALL BATTERY ELECTRIC VANS

In the small van sector the towing capacities start with the eNV200 at 410kgs, although production has recently been terminated it was one of the first to have any form of towing capability. If you look at the Stellantis group brands, mainly, the Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo, Vauxhall Combo ( Fiat don’t currently take this model). It shouldn’t be forgotten that it is also the basis for the Toyota Proace City as well and all these models have the same towing capacity of 750kgs. The next best electric small van is the Maxus eDeliver 3 which on the larger battery model offers a towing capability up to 1090kgs. Finally the new Renault Kangoo Van E-TECH, which is also the underlining van for the new Mercedes-Benz eCitan, boasts the highest towing capacity in the sector at 1500kgs.
MEDIUM BATTERY ELECTRIC VANS

When it comes to the electric medium van market the sector is dominated by the Stellantis Group brands, with the Citroen eDispatch, Peugeot Expert, Fiat eScudo as well as the Vauxhall Vivaro -e who all have a towing capacity of 1000kgs. This is also the case for the fifth manufacturer using this basic van outline, Toyota and their Proace. All the other vans including the eVito do not have a towing capacity published.
LARGE BATTERY ELCTRIC VANS

If you are looking for a large panel van based around the 3500kg gross vehicle weight to also tow then currently you will be disappointed. Whilst the medium van market has a choice of vehicles to tow, large electric vans do not appear to tow as well, indeed nearly all the major manufacturers do not publish a towing capacity for their vans other than two. The current exception to this rule are the recently announced the Ford e-Transit with a capacity of 2000kgs and then the Maxus eDeliver 9 which has a towing capacity of 1500kgs.
